Park Information: Haw River State Park

Located in the northern Piedmont Triad region, picturesque terrain makes Haw River State Park the perfect place to connect with nature. Housed within this natural setting is The Summit Environmental Education and Conference Center, N.C. State Park's first residential environmental education center. Along with environmental education programming, The Summit Center offers conference center facilities for groups ranging in size from 10 to 180.

Iron Ore Belt Access
The more traditional side of Haw River State Park is found at the Iron Ore Belt Access.A picnic area is located adjacent to the parking lot while a second picnic pad is found halfway along the Great Blue Heron Loop trail.Additional picnic areas and trails will be brought online in the near future.

Description of Work:

The Food Service SupervisorIIis a supervisory position, managing and directing the food service operation at Haw River State Park. The kitchen provides meals for the state park dining room serving students in environmental education programming and adults participating in seminars, workshops, and group activities. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are served each day groups are in attendance. This positionis responsible for planning and conducting a sound food service management program including menu planning, ordering of food and supplies, food production and service, and sanitation standards. Work is performed independently and reviewed by the inspections and evaluation of reports for adequacy of diet, budget costs of operation, and sanitation standards. Supervises kitchen personnel in maintaining high standards of food sanitation. Leads in the hiring, training, and supervising of employees. This position conducts food inventory and other necessary kitchen supplies. Ensures that all dietary concerns are met at each meal. Performs related duties as required.

Work schedule will be variable: weekends, nights, early mornings, and holidays can all be expected.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in large-scale cooking and food service activities.
  • Considerable knowledge of the accepted principles of dietetics and nutrition.
  • General knowledge of the dietary requirements for a variety of special diets and allowable substitutions for various items found on diet menus.
  • Ability to estimate accurately the amounts of raw food needed to supply the number of persons to be served.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of kitchen employees.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness and food sanitation.
  • Ability to inspect incoming fresh vegetables, fruits, and meats to determine that they meet purchase order specifications.
  • Must have excellent communication and organization skills: must be able to work with conference coordinator and guests in scheduling events.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in dietetics, food management, culinary arts, hospitality management from an appropriately accredited institution; or graduation from high school and four years' supervisory experience in the preparation and serving of food in quantity lots; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Special requirements

    Possession of orability to secure valid health certificate (ServSafe) issued by the County Health Department.
