Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic

The Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic performs duties associated with providing emergency and non-emergency medical care to the sick and injured in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Suburban EMS policies.

Operational Essential Functions:
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls calmly, efficiently and promptly.
  • Performs all job responsibilities in a manner that protects patient privacy, in accordance with Suburban EMS s Privacy Policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a health care provider.
  • Treats patients at the scene, en route to the hospital, and in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, local, laws, regulations and standards and in accordance with Suburban EMS policies, rules, and guidelines.
  • Assesses the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed.
  • Extricates victims of accidents, sudden illness or entrapment using proper rescue and medical techniques.
  • Communicates effectively with professional medical personnel and treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and/or to arrange reception of patients to the appropriate center.
  • Maintains order at the scene in a professional manner to ensure patient care.
  • Completes patient care forms, insurance forms, evaluation forms, and all other forms in a competent and timely fashion, as required by federal, state, local, and Suburban EMS policy, rules, and guidelines.
  • Adheres to and follows all applicable policies and procedures concerning safety, contamination, and prevention of contamination by blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious diseases.
  • Drives and operates specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed, in accordance with federal, state, local laws, regulations and standards; and in accordance with Suburban EMS policies, rules, and guidelines.
  • Performs checks to ensure that vehicles are in good working condition at all times and are properly maintained and stocked with all necessary equipment that is in good working order at all times.
  • Receives requests for emergency and non-emergency ambulance service and other duties related to communication via two-way radio and other communication devices.
  • Maintains accurate records of ambulance equipment and other emergency equipment and/or personnel dispatched to each emergency and non-emergency request and other operation and administrative data as required to maintain the operational continuity of Suburban EMS and as directed by superiors.
  • Properly documents each patient encounter on the approved patient care report in accordance with Suburban EMS policies and procedures.
  • Communicates professionally and efficiently, over the radio and the telephone, with appropriate language and careful regard to the divulgence of information, and respecting confidentiality requests at all times.
Education, Experience, and Training:
  • High school diploma or a GED as evidence of completion
  • At least one year of experience working in rescue and emergency medical services
-Current state Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic, or PHRN certification and license, if applicable
  • ACLS certification; PALS, APLS, or PHTLS highly recommended
  • Pennsylvania approved certification for CPR for the Professional Rescuer and/or American Heart Association BLS for the Health Care Provider
  • Required continuing medical education credits as set forth by the State EMS office
  • EVOC certification
  • Compliance with NIMS
  • Hazardous Materials R&I
  • Valid driver s license
